Summary
I previously reviewed the Gtech 2.0 lawnmower, impressed by its capabilities. When Gtech launched an upgraded model, the CLM50, I was curious what improved. However, I found the changes minor – altered color and slightly different dimensions. While still excellent, it wasn’t the upgrade hoped for.
Nonetheless, the CLM50 has great features. Its 42cm deck handles medium to large lawns up to 400m2. The 48v lithium-ion battery charges fully in an hour and runs for 40 minutes, excellent runtime.
In this review, I cover the CLM50’s key features. Though not a major upgrade, it remains a quality mower for lawns up to 400m2.

- Grass box capacity: 50 L

Power System
Like its predecessor, the CLM50 uses a 48v lithium-ion battery. Impressively, its rapid charger fills the battery within just 60 minutes – far quicker than mowers taking hours. This charged battery then provides an uninterrupted 40 minutes of cutting, generally sufficient for most lawns in one session. The clear battery gauge prevents the risk of unexpected drain, using easy-to-read lights. Quick charging and clear battery life tracking are major conveniences.

Performance
The underside blade helps get a close cut along edges, saving time trimming. Its lightweight and nimble wheels maneuver freely around obstacles rather than just straight lines. While lacking a rear roller for stripes, easy handling and close-cutting edges outweigh this minor omission. Overall the CLM50 offers convenience through agile movement and precision edging.
Deck and Blade
With a 42cm cutting deck, the Gtech CLM50 is the ideal mower for gardens up to 400 square metres. Not only will the battery provide enough time for this size of lawn, but the generous deck will cover much more grass in each pass. That said, there’s nothing wrong with using it on a smaller lawn.
The single carbon steel blade is lightweight and effective, making a clean and efficient cut. If it’s durability you are looking for, this type of metal blade will stand the test of time, especially when you compare it to its plastic alternatives. Typically, it runs at 2800rpm but with a smart sensor, this power can be automatically increased to 3500rpm if more oomph is needed. You would think that a single blade (Omniblade) will cause issues with vibrations, however the blade is perfectly counterbalanced by a weight that eliminates any vibrations from the spinning blade.
Height Adjustment
Depending on the time of year, you may need to alter the height at which you cut your lawn. Most mowers will come with some level of height adjustment, but not all are as simple to operate as the Gtech CLM50. The central height adjustment lever is smooth and so quick to use. Simply move it from one position to another and watch the mower move to your desired height; then all you need to do is get on with mowing.
What’s more this Gtech lawnmower features 6 cutting heights ranging between 30mm and 80mm giving you a lot more versatility and flexibility in how you cut your lawn. It would have been nice to have a slightly lower cutting height for those who like a very close bowling green cut. However this is not always a good option for the health of the grass.
Handles
Storage can be a nightmare at times, especially with cumbersome mowers like the old petrol ones. With the Gtech CLM50, the folding handles make popping this into the shed so much easier. Some mowers feature handles that only fold down once, but this one has a handle which dual folds, ensuring that you have a completely flat tool for storing.
Grass Collection Box
If you’re mowing a large lawn then you’re also going to need a bigger grass box and this Gtech lawnmower comes with one that can hold up to 50 litres of clippings. While the mower may not have a mulching plug, which is something that a lot of people prefer, it makes up for it in other ways. Not only is the grass box very spacious, but it also has a full indicator making it much easier to know when you need to stop to empty. But with all that space it won’t be very often.
What’s more, the grass box has a unique design that allows it to fold flat. The top and base are made from plastic but the sides are made from cloth. In some cases, the cloth used for grass bags isn’t the best quality, but Gtech has gone above and beyond and used an extremely durable material that will last as long as the mower.
Practicalities
With such a lightweight tool, mowing the lawn suddenly feels like much less of a chore. The Gtech CLM50 weighs in at just 13.5kg so it’s incredibly easy to move around. If you’ve long battled with a heavy mower, this will certainly be a breath of fresh air. Add to this the fact that your comfort has been considered with things like padded handles and easy to reach controls, then tending to the garden is something of a dream.
In addition to this, the easy storage of the Gtech CLM50 means that you won’t have to struggle to put this away at the end of the mow. And of course, you’ve got all the other practicalities of cordless mowers such as the lack of a power cord and being more environmentally friendly.
Safety Features
It is so important to have a lawnmower that operates safely, especially if there is a high risk of an accidental start up. For this reason, you will find that pretty much all cordless lawnmowers come with a safety key, and the Gtech CLM50 is no exception.
These small keys plug into a port on the top of the mower and must be turned in order for the mower to work. On top of this, there is a push button that must be engaged as well as the start triggers, so you’re getting something that’s really safe and yet still easy to use.
Roller (Stripes)
Do you like a striped lawn? Well, sorry the Gtech CLM50 does NOT have a roller at the rear.
If you simply have to have a striped lawn then you can either purchase a separate roller or you may want to consider the Flymo 300 as it does have a rear roller.
Mulching
This mower does NOT have a mulching facility. If you want to learn about mulching and the advantages, then click here.

Downsides
- Handles do not slide up and down for height adjustment.
- No rear roller for striped lawn appearance.
- Price – cheaper alternatives available (but not as good).
As with the original Gtech mower 2.0, I really struggled with this mower to find any significant downsides. The features are great and all seem to work well for a mower at this price point. The build quality and reliability cannot be faulted, it performs as you would expect. So just be aware of the above points to ensure they are not important to you when purchasing your next mower.
Should You Buy This Model?
The Gtech CLM50 is among the best cordless mowers, offering power without complexity. Its clean, efficient cut makes lawn maintenance easy. While not ideal for petrol converts due to limited range, regular users of smaller lawns will be satisfied.
Despite minor upgrades from the 2.0, excellent usability through my experience means enjoyment. The 30-day money back guarantee unlikely to be used. Best suited to gardens up to 400m2 not requiring striping, with its large grass box, quick charge, and foldable storage. Ideal for a risk-free trial of this quality mower.
Of course this is open to interpretation, so if you don’t fall under every single category then don’t worry I’m sure you’ll still love this product. It has loads of great features that I’m sure you make use of even if you’re not its perfect customer.
Conclusion
The Gtech CLM50 packs a punch despite fewer features than some mowers. Its higher price buys convenience and quality – the well-made design feels easy to use with no complex operations. As an “improved” model, the minor changes were underwhelming, but the mower’s excellent usability makes these insignificant. Simply charge in an hour and get the job done easily with this quality mower.

What’s the warranty?
How many years will the battery last with normal summer usage, say once every 10 days?
Hi
2 year warranty – https://www.gtech.co.uk/terms-and-conditions#option4
You will be looking at around 3 years before you start to see some reduced runtimes.
Thanks
Mark
I had this mower delivered yesterday and I can’t get the green clips that hold the handle parts together to clip down. Been trying for 2 hours!!
HI Debbie, please ensure that you loosen off the handle before trying to fold it / lock it into place. You have to get it just right so that it isn’t too loose but loose enough to enable you to close it.
You can always give Gtech a call, and their customer service should be able to help you. Thanks
Is the CLM50 self propelled or does it have to be pushed around the garden
Hi Alan, not this is not a self-propelled model, this is a push mower. If you are looking for a self-propelled cordless mower see the link below – there is a video review as well and is very popular at the moment.
