Summary
The Hyundai HYM80LI460SP is a battery powered self-propelled cordless lawn mower that is supplied with two 2.5Ah 40v lithium-ion batteries and provides up to 40 minutes of run-time. It has a 45.2cm deck size, a 65 litre grass collection box, 6 cutting heights from 25mm to 75mm, and weighs around 29kg net due to its steel deck. The Hyundai HYM80LI460SP is supplied with a mulching plug, rear and side-discharge attachment, two safety keys and is covered by a 3 year Hyundai warranty.
I finally got my hands on this Hyundai 80 volt cordless mower, and could not wait to test it out on my 500m² lawn, to see if all the positive feedback I have received is justified.
Just bear in mind there is also a push version available (without the self-propelled drive) and this is the model I used in my video review below – Hyundai HYM80LI460P (all other features are identical).
Before we get into the review of this Hyundai HYM80LI460SP Cordless Lawnmower, I think it’s worth saying a quick word about cordless self-propelled lawn mowers in general. If you asked me 3 or 4 years ago if a cordless self-propelled lawn mower is any good and worth the investment, I would have said a resounding no! But in 2022, the battery and motor technology, and indeed, mower technology in general, has improved to such an extent that my answer now would be, most definitely “yes”. In this Hyundai HYM80LI460SP review you will see why cordless mowers, and in particular self-propelled cordless mowers, are now a real and viable alternative to petrol mowers.
At 18 inches – or just a little over 45cm, you are getting adequate coverage on each pass and thanks to the variable cutting heights, you are also provided with the freedom to create the type of lawn that you want. But how does this mower compare to other brands and does it live up to Hyundai’s reputation for quality and performance?
Without further ado, let’s get on an take a closer look at this Hyundai HYM80LI460SP Cordless Lawnmower…
Main Features
- 45.2cm (18-inch) cutting width
- Powerful 80v lithium-ion battery
- Self-propelled drive (push version also available)
- Mulching, cut & collect, side and rear discharge options
- Large 65-litre grass collection bag
- Vertical storage and foldable design for compact storage
- Safety keys
- Steel deck
- Quiet operation
Power System And Batteries
With this Hyundai HYM80LI460SP, you are getting more than just a product from a reputable manufacturer – this is also being backed up by a 3 year platinum manufacturer’s warranty. Hyundai is a company that is synonymous with innovation and quality where technology is concerned and this was apparent while I was using and testing this mower.
The mower runs on two 40v 2.5Ah batteries and has a brushless motor, giving you an impressive amount of power and run-time, which makes this something of a mean machine. As you can see from my video review, cutting the very long grass at the end of my garden was a breeze and the mower/batteries never struggled under load. Furthermore, these batteries have been designed with durability in mind and as such, can withstand more than 1000 charges – that is a lot of lawn mowing! Now 40 minutes may not sound like a long time, but when looking at the competition, it compares very favourably. This gives you plenty of time to cover a medium to larger sized lawn area.
Remember this is a self-propelled lawn mower, so any battery needs to not only to power the blade, but also the mower itself (if used), therefore 40 minutes of run-time is impressive indeed.
Just remember, if the condition of your grass is very long and damp, then this 40 minute run-time will be reduced. Having said that, I cut my 500m² lawn and still had 25% battery charge left, that is impressive!
Just as a side note, this mower is available without the self-propelled drive and its model number is Hyundai HYM80LI460P. It has an identical batteries supplied, size and specification apart from the self-propulsion.
Battery Charger
The batteries take 80 minutes to reach their full charge and will deliver as much as 40 minutes of cutting time per charge. Just so you know, there is also a fast charger available for this mower that chargers the battery in an excellent 30 minutes.
On the slightly negative note, you only get a single standard charger supplied with this mower, and therefore can only charge one battery at a time. So another great reason to purchase the fast charger, it is around £50 so it is a worthwhile addition.
Another notable feature of these batteries is the fact that they can be used in the entire Hyundai 40v/80v range of cordless tools. As with all lithium-ion batteries, the cost is not cheap, so having the ability to share them between other Hyundai tools is a great feature that saves you money.
- No cables, no petrol, no pollution: Simply charge the battery and you're ready to go
- Self-propelled: Drives itself - simply steer
- 452mm / 17.8" cutting width: Ideal for medium to large-sized lawns
- 6 adjustable cutting heights: Get the perfect finish on your lawn
- 65L grass collector bag with mulching option: Minimises time spent emptying cuttings
- Weighs just 27.8kg: Easy to push around the garden

Performance
This is a mower that has been designed to make the job easy. With its self-propelled drive, you simply need to guide the machine around your garden for optimal results every time. Not only does this mean that the job will get done far more quickly, but it also means that it won’t be as physically demanding on you, the user. If like me you have a flat lawn, then you may want to consider the push model of this mower (HYM80LI460P), as naturally the self-propelled feature will reduce the run-time slightly and makes the mower a little heavier.
The 1200w brushless motor offers superior performance and has been designed to stand the test of time. Motors of this nature require no maintenance yet still give you high speeds, precision cutting and effortless operation.
In terms of operation, this is a super-quiet piece of equipment. I measured 89dB on my iPhone at the operator level which is a very quiet operation indeed. While petrol lawn mowers can offer a more significant amount of power, there is no doubt that battery-operated ones deliver on user-friendliness. Low-decibel output means a more pleasant experience for you – and your neighbours.
The cut quality is what you would expect from a quality mower as is the grass collection ability. The Hyundai HYM80LI460SP collects the grass cuttings effectively when using the grass collection box and has a handy full indicator to let you know when it needs emptying. (during my testing I did find that sometimes this indication flap got stuck)
Check out my video review below to see just how well this mower cuts the lawn and how effective it is at collecting the grass cuttings. I also tested this Hyundai under a tree with lots of debris, and again this Hyundai did a great job of picking the majority up effectively. I also tested the three other cutting options, including rear discharge, side discharge and mulching, so be sure to take a look at the video below.
Hyundai HYM80LI460P Video Review
If you want to see this cordless mower in action, why not see my video review below where I share all the features and functions. In addition you can see the performance and results of each cutting method including mulching, rear and side discharge.
Features In Detail
Deck & Blade
The robust steel rotating blade gives you a clean and precise cut every time. Furthermore, it is a decent size at 18 inches, which is just a little more than 45cm, making it perfect for most domestic situations. Spare parts are not a problem with this mower should you need them. The blade can also be sharpened by any DIYer with some basic tools.
Oh, did I mention this mower has a steel deck? This Hyundai HYM80LI460SP really is giving its petrol counterparts a run for their money!
Cutting Diameter
For more extensive lawns, the 452mm cutting diameter is ideal, but it is also perfect for medium-sized lawn areas. Essentially, you are getting a diverse piece of equipment that will make light work of a variety of lawn sizes.
Handles
The most notable feature of the handles on this device is that they fold away so that when it comes to storing the mower, space needn’t be a concern. The handles fold at both the central position and the lower deck position. You will need to fold the handles at both points to utilise the handy vertical storage option. Again, check out my video review above to see this feature and its benefits in action.
What’s more, the ergonomically designed handle makes using the equipment extraordinarily comfortable, and the padded foam grip further adds to this.
Another notable feature of the handles is the ability to adjust the height to 3 different settings. This will allow you to adjust the angle to your ideal posture, meaning a more pleasant and comfortable position whilst mowing.
As this is a self-propelled mower you will have the two levers along the bars for stopping the mower (OPC) and the self-propulsion lever. If you decide, like me, to go for the push model you will only have a single OPC lever on your bars.
Wheels
The Hyundai HYM80LI460SP sits on four sturdy wheels that make this a very stable piece of equipment. What’s more, the mower’s larger rear wheels are designed in this way to give you greater control and stability during use. As with most mulching mowers there is no rear roller on this mower.
Wheel Sizes
- Front 178mm
- Rear 254mm
Height Adjustment
The ability to adjust the cutting height on a mower is essential – especially when you are keen to cut the grass to different heights according to your requirements and season of the year.
The Hyundai will not let you down, since it features an easy to adjust cutting height lever that takes seconds to switch and adjust all 4 wheels simultaneously. You are getting a versatile range of options, and the cutting height can be set to anywhere between 25mm and 75mm.
Once the height is set securely in position, there is no worry that it will bounce out and scalp the lawn on the first bump you hit.
It is true, that this mower will not give you an extremely low bowling green cut that can only be achieved with cylinder mowers, going as low as 17mm. Having said that, it’s never a good idea to cut the lawn too low unless you are prepared to maintain and nurture it on a frequent basis. Keeping your lawn a little longer will ensure you do not stress it too much and it can obtain enough moisture, light and nutrients to remain healthy.
Mulching
Many modern cordless mowers have omitted a mulching feature, and this can deter a lot of consumers. However, the Hyundai HYM80LI460SP comes with a mulching plug which can be easily used as and when you need it. Some manufactures require you to purchase the mulching plug separately, however Hyundai included it in the box (and the side discharge plug too).
Just bear in mind that the mulching plug is pre-inserted into the machine when purchased, so needs to be removed if you want to use the other cutting options.
Mulching is highly beneficial to your lawn, it allows the mower to spread the grass cuttings back over the lawn to improve its health and encourage future growth.
If you would like to learn more about the benefits of mulching, click on my article – The Benefits of Mulching Lawn Mowers.
Grass Collection Box
This mower comes with one of the most generous, and good quality, grass boxes on the market, compared to other products in this class. The sizable 65-litre offering will mean that you no longer need to take frequent trips to empty before continuing with the job.
It is a fabric grass collection box with a plastic lid which is easy to attach and remove and is also vented. I do prefer this type of hybrid grass box to “all solid”, or “all cloth” boxes. You are getting a more durable top without compromising on the improved air circulation found on cloth collection bags. Better circulation equals better grass collection ability.
I did seem to have issues with the “full flap” occasionally not working and getting stuck shut, but no big deal for me.
Cutting Features
This mower is versatile as it has 4 different mowing options.
- Cut and collect: This is the standard feature with the grass box attached and the clippings collected.
- Side discharge: The side discharge chute come supplied and attaches to the side of the mower for the clipping to be expelled.
- Mulching: The mulching plug is again supplied with the Hyundai HYM80LI460SP and blocks the rear chute so the clippings are cut more finely and expelled back into the lawn.
- Rear Discharge: Two rubber feet are supplied with the mower that hold the rear flap open slightly for rear discharge of the grass cuttings.
In my video review above, I demonstrate all 4 cutting options and show you the results achieved with each method.
In summary all the cutting methods worked as expected. The mulching plug and side discharge chute are easy to attach and remove and the two clips for the rear discharge are also quick and easy to attach, but could be easily lost so take care.
Practicalities
The most apparent feature of this cordless mower that makes it super practical, apart from the features mentioned above, is the easy vertical storage, couple this with the lack of cords and you’ve got an amazing piece of kit.
Cordless mowers make cutting the grass far easier thanks to the user not being tethered to a power source, therefore, more free to move around the lawn with ease. What’s more, the lack of cables means that there is no chance of an accident involving them.
I have reviewed and cut my 500m² lawn with an electric mower in the past, and I can tell you it’s no fun what-so-ever. Constantly worrying about the power cord and fighting to keep it out of harms way slows the whole process of getting the lawn cut, and making it a less enjoyable job.
Opting for the self-propelled model of this mower means that practically speaking, mowing is even more of a breeze especially if you have slopes on your lawn. Users who find it too strenuous to push a heavy mower around the lawn will massively benefit from this feature. Just because this is not a petrol mower, it does not mean it’s light weight. This Hyundai HYM80LI460SP weighs in at a hefty 29.8kg (net).
The option of purchasing an additional fast charger will also add to the practicality of this mower and reduce the charge time from 80mins to 30mins.

Safety Features
The two safety keys that come with this product means that no accidental start-ups will be possible. This is vital if you have children in the garden and gives the user that added safety aspect that is so important with powered products. The spare key is handy as they do tend to somehow disappear!!

Pros & Cons
Should You Buy This Model?
If you have ever found it challenging to push your lawn mower around the outdoor space due to physical limitations, then a self-propelled mower could be the answer to your problems. The Hyundai HYM80LI460SP is an excellent choice thanks to the range of useful features, and if you have a larger-sized lawn, you will notice how efficient this product is at maintaining it.
Users who do not want to use a petrol-powered mower but still want the advantage of a good level of power, self-propulsion, side & rear discharge and mulching ability will likely find that this product meets their needs.
Incidentally, you can purchase this mower without the self-propelled drive as shown in my video above. The model number for the NON self-propelled version is HYM80LI460P and there is a link for more details below.
While it is true that you could purchase a similar petrol mower cheaper, many do not want to worry about the regular maintenance, fuel storage, potential start issues and on-going costs of petrol.
If you are in any doubt about this cordless mower from Hyundai, the take a look at my video review above to see this mower in action. I cover everything from unboxing, assembly, testing all 4 cutting options to mowing on very long grass. I think you will see why this mower is my top pick cordless mower for larger lawns, and like I said above, for those looking to switch over from petrol to cordless battery.

Conclusion
The Hyundai HYM80LI460SP is a mower that is at the top of its game. It is a diverse piece of equipment that will stand the test of time thanks to the powerful, long-lasting batteries and robust outer steel shell of the machine.
Mowing has never been more simple, and this is largely owing to the self-propelled drive of this piece of equipment, but can also be attributed to the good build quality, large grass collection box, ample cutting width, variable cutting heights and options. Aside from that, a cordless tool means that there are no emissions, therefore no damage to the environment, which is essential for the green-minded gardener.
In terms of modern mowers, you won’t find anything quite as effective and impressive as this. If you’re looking for a brand you can trust to deliver a precise and effective cordless mower, then look no further than Hyundai. Both their HYM80LI460SP and HYM80LI460P cordless lawn mowers are both powerful and offer a generous cutting width for medium to larger-sized lawns.
In summary, you will not be disappointed with this cordless mower from Hyundai, apart from the few minor negatives mentioned above, this is one of the best all-round cordless mowers I have tested in the last few years. If this cordless mower suits your requirements and you have the budget to invest (not the cheapest on the market), then this should absolutely be on the top of your shortlist.

Hi Robert. I found your review most useful and I’ve bought the Hyundai HYM80LI460SP (from Robert Dyas).
All the instructions are clear but I cannot see how to “Hook the grass collector bag onto the rear of lawn mower.” (step 2 of the assembly instructions).
I’ve tried this both with the two supports (mentioned in step 4, “Rear discharge function”) installed, and with them not installed. It seems almost as if the collector I have is for a different model; or is missing a part (on both sides) that provides the hook. It’s possible that the design of this model has been updated, because step 1 of the assembly instructions (“Attach The Handle Bar”) doesn’t quite seem to match the product I’ve got – which seems to have a different mechanism on the lower handle for adjusting the handle height to the operator, which was already assembled on delivery.
Any advice, or a photo showing how the grass collector is supposed to fit on the mower, would be much appreciated.
Hi John, there are two alu blocks either side of the collector at the top. They just drop straight into the plastic retainers at the top underside of the rear flap. I have included some photos below to help.
If this doesn’t help, feel free to send some pictures to accompany your written description or you can contact Hyundai’s support team, they are very helpful https://genpower.zendesk.com/hc/en-us
Kind regards Mark
Can the mower be used without the self propel feature like a regular push mower and thus saving some battery
Hi Bill
Yes you can, you would just disengage the drive function.
Regards
Mark
Hi,
Is this lawn mower better than hyundai 224cc petrol version? Is this powerful enough. Thank you,
Hi Jude, without knowing too much about your lawn size and condition etc, I think that a general article discussing petrol vs cordless may help.

Let me know if you you have any other questions. Thanks
What speed Is the self propel? Slow walk, medium or fast.
Hi Robert,
I believe the speed is around 2.5mph, so slightly slower than a normal walking pace. I have contacted Hyundai to confirm this and will come back to you when they respond.
Happy New Year
Mark
Hi Robert, I have received a response from Hyundai. They confirmed that the self propelled speed of the HYM80LI460SP, it is 1m/s.
This is equivalent to 2.23mph.
Hope this helps.
Mark
Thank you for the reply, appreciated.
