Summary
What is the Greenworks 40V 35cm Cordless Lawn Mower? The Greenworks 40V is a cordless lawn mower that has a deck size of 35cm, covers lawns up to 300m² and has 5 cutting heights between 20mm and 80mm. This Greenworks cordless lawn mower has a large 40 litre grass collection box, charges in a very respectable 30 minutes, provides up to 30 minutes of run time and has the ability to mulch the lawn clippings without having to purchase any additional accessories.
The Greenworks 40V Cordless Lawn Mower 35cm (14″) is one of the best selling cordless lawn mowers in the UK, but is it all what it’s cracked up to be?
The Greenworks Mower is indeed packed with features you would expect to see in higher end cordless mowers and certainly has the ability to cut a lawn in excess of 250 meters square (roughly the size of a tennis court), but it needs to be compared to its nearest rival, the Flymo Mighti-Mo 300 Li 40V, to judge how good this mower really is.
To compare Greenworks 35cm 40V to other cordless mowers in higher or lower price range would distort the results, these two mowers are probably the most affordable and best performing 40V cordless mowers on the market today.
Below I’ll detail all the features and functions of the Greenworks 35cm 40V, both good and not so good. Then I will compare this mower to the Flymo Mighti-Mo 300 Li 40V so you understand exactly what you’re getting for your money.

Power System
Like many cordless lawn mowers, the Greenworks 35cm 40V is powered by a Lithium-ion battery (40V) and electrical motor which will charge in around 30 mins. The battery is removed from the mower for charging and storage. When purchasing this mower there is an option to purchase this mower with a second battery. This is only really required if you have a larger lawn (over 300m²), then you will need to switch the batteries during mowing. Both batteries combines will reach up to 600m² in size. Swapping the batteries is very quick and easy with all Greenworks mowers.
The Greenworks G-MAX 40V 2Ah battery and charger supplied with this mower are compatible with all the Greenworks G-Max 40V tools. These interchangeable batteries will run your Greenworks G-Max 40V hedge cutter, chainsaw, trimmer, cultivator and leaf blower.
Something else that’s nice on this mower is an easy to see and read battery level indicator; you would think that this is standard on all cordless mowers, but unfortunately it is not.
With both the Greenworks and the Flymo mowers, only one battery can be charged at any time. I also found that the charger with the Flymo will not allow the battery to be recharged immediately after being used and needs a considerable period of time (40 mins) to allow the battery to cool down, so bare this in mind when comparing charging times.
In summary, the Greenworks 40V will give the same mowing time as the Flymo Mighti-Mo 300 Li, however the Greenworks will charge in a quarter of the time as the Flymo. But in saying that the mowing/charging time doesn’t directly affect you if 30 minutes is enough time to cut the entire lawn as there will be no rush to charge the batteries for the next cut.
Also, the power system is completely electric so it produces zero emissions and works extremely quietly. Which is quieter? Well there’s not much between them but I would say the Flymo is slightly quieter than the Greenworks, but really there is nothing in it that you would notice.
The great thing about these cordless lawn mowers is that you can set out to work at any time without it disturbing your family or your neighbours, as the mowers are very quiet. With zero emissions they look after the environment as well. Please see the comparison table below to provide additional information.

Features In Detail
Blades
The Greenworks 40V Mower has a 35 cm cutting width with a single metal rotary blade that provide the following benefits:
- The blade allows for a wide 35 cm cutting width right to the edge of the mower.
- Metal blades generally wear less quickly than plastic blades which results in you needing to replace the lawn mower blades less often.
- Metal blades are generally sharper and provide a cleaner cut to the grass blade resulting in a neater, tidier and superior finish to your lawn and garden. The metal blades on the Greenworks 40V can be sharpened when needed unlike plastic blades.
This again does put this mower ahead of its competitors. It is great to see that Greenworks have taken advantage of what is clearly the most effective cutting system in the market at the moment.
In summary, this mower cuts extremely well whether or not you are collecting the clippings or mulching. Oh yes, I forgot to mention this mower also has the option to mulch the cuttings. (if you would like to find out more about mulching please see section below)
Height Adjustment
In order to combat the changing season and to continually improve the look of your lawn, you can adjust the height at which the Greenworks 40V Cordless Lawn Mower cuts at. This is done very easily using the large single lever located on the front of the mower. Now, normally we would say that a front adjusting lever is always harder than a centrally located lever, but on this occasion the adjustment on the Greenworks is just a easy. I think this is achieved by a linking arm to the rear wheels which make the adjustment very smooth with very little effort in both directions.
You will have the option to cut from anywhere between 20mm to 80mm with 5 separate cutting lengths, this allows a lower and higher cut when compared to the Flymo. Just make sure you don’t set it at the shortest setting when the lawn has significant growth, instead start at a higher setting and gradually work your way down. This gives the areas of small grass the opportunity to catch up with the long, resulting in a more even and lush lawn.
As well as being able to sharpen the metal blades, it is also possible to purchase a replacement blade. Replacing the blade is relatively easy for anyone with basic DIY skills and tools.
Cutting Diameter
The Greenworks Cordless mowers are available in the following deck diameter sizes. This range makes it easy for you to choose the width that is best for your lawn’s shape and size.

The cutting diameter of this mower is by no means the largest at 35 cms (14”), but it is perfect for those with narrow strips to navigate. This is slightly larger than the Flymo Mighti-Mo 300 Li but still small enough to manoeuvre around the tricky areas of your lawn. Now, compared to its counterparts with much larger widths, this might be a potential disadvantage; however, it could also be beneficial if it’s to be used in a smaller areas and lawns with narrow strips.
You may well be thinking that for a mower with slightly larger width you would have to compromise on having a heavy and difficult to manoeuvre mower. Well that’s not the case with the Greenworks as it is one of the lightest mowers in this class and size range and weighs a lot less that a petrol mower.
When you need a mower that’s light in weight and mows your lawn in the shortest time possible, the Greenworks cordless mower may well be the best option for you.
A full review of the Greenworks 49cm cordless lawn mower can be found here.
Grass Box Capacity
As with all cordless lawn mowers of this size, the grass box is not going to hold as much as its larger counterparts, however 40 L is 25% larger than the Flymo at 30 L. This will allow for longer periods of use without needing to empty the grass clippings as often.
The grass box on the Greenworks is very easy to remove. The grass clippings empty from the box with no obstructions.
An airflow tab located on the bag tells you when the bag is full, eliminating any guesswork about when it needs emptying.
Practicalities
The light weight, oversized wheels (18 cm rear wheels, 15 cm front wheels) and the smaller cutting width make this mower excellent for smaller lawns or lawns with slopes or uneven surfaces.
This lawn mower will make lawn care much easier and enjoyable. The whole experience will be quiet, hassle free as you will not be struggling with a heavy and oversized lawn mower.
As with all cordless lawn mowers, not being tethered by the cord not only makes it easier to mow the lawn, but safer and more environmentally friendly.
Does this make it more practical compared to the closest competition? Well, yes I think it does for people with smaller lawns with obstacles that don’t have a need for longer running/mowing time. There is also a fold away handle that makes carrying and storing the mower in the garage or shed very easy.
Roller (Stripes)
Do you like a stripey lawn? Well, sorry the Greenworks Lawn mower does NOT have a roller at the rear.
If you simply have to have a stripey lawn then you can either purchase a separate roller or you may want to consider the Flymo 300 as it does have a rear roller.
Safety Features
What I really like about the Greenworks mower is the addition of a removable safety key that disables the lawn mower to help prevent accidental starting. This is a nice feature, not found on similar cordless mowers, that provides peace of mind around children.
Mulching
As with almost all Greenworks electric corded and cordless mowers they are capable of mulching. The Greenworks seems to do this very well due it its metal blade that produces a fine and very small mulch that helps soil fertility. This is fantastic that Greenworks have this built into their mowers and it is not an optional extra as with some Bosch lawn mowers. Well done Greenworks!
To learn more about the benefits of a mower that has the ability to mulch the lawn, please see my article “The Benefits of Mulching Grass – Complete Guide with Pros & Cons“.
What’s Included in the Box
- The mower itself
- G-MAX 40V 2Ah Li-ion battery included
- G-MAX 40V charger included
- 40 L Grass Box
- Mulch Plug
- 2 year domestic warranty
Downsides
- This mower does not have a roller at the rear so you will not achieve a striped lawn appearance.
- You can only charge one battery at a time, so a second charger may be required if you have an additional battery.
- This mower can struggle a little in really dense wet grass (start on higher setting). Be prepared to make more passes in such conditions, however this is a problem that most cordless mowers experience.
Now, the above points may sound trivial and are common to most cordless mowers but should be taken into consideration anyway. They are part of the package and it’s better being aware of them before a purchase than after.
Pros and Cons
Conclusion
Overall this is a very good mower, I actually rate it very slightly higher than the Flymo Mighti-Mo 300 Li due to its portability, good build quality, slightly larger deck size, faster charge time and above all great value for money.
The extra features like the removable safety key is a nice touch but one that you will most probably never use. Besides you want features that will help you achieve a lovely looking lawn with least amount of work and effort.
The Greenworks 40V is very proficient at cutting varying lengths and thickness of grass for such a lightweight cordless mower this is very impressive. It’s worth mentioning that by cutting more regularly and avoiding very long or wet grass this should avoid putting too much strain on the battery. Remember to always keep the battery charged and stored in a dry place over winter.
With this mower you’re getting features normally found in high priced cordless mowers, so this is a very reasonable price for such a well performing, durable and reliable lawn mover.
But do I think it’s better than its closest competitors?
Yes I do!
At this price range this mower really offers great value for money and it would be very hard to find a cordless mower that performs this well and has such a good build quality for this price. To get the best out of this mower you will need to cut your lawn more regularly and not let the grass grow too high or dense as it may struggle a little, this is however common with all cordless mowers at this price point and specification.
Overall, I think this is a fantastic mower and I encourage everyone with a lawn no larger than 300 m² garden to purchase one. Even if you have a larger lawn there is always the option of purchasing the mower with an additional battery or you could always purchase an additional battery at a later date, if needed.
Don’t forget recharging the battery only takes 30 minutes so why not have a break and then you are ready to go again.
Greenworks is really getting a name for itself and proving to be a reliable and cost effective brand. In fact, I think it’s one of the best mowers at this level and deck size you can get right now!
Should You Buy This Model?
Well there are a few factors to consider first, whether or not you purchase this model really depends on your garden and situation.
To give you some guidance on which type of customer would suit this model best, below I’ve listed the categories they would fall under:
- People with lawns up to 300m² in size.
- Those who require a quick battery charge time (30mins).
- People who want a battery that is interchangeable with other Greenworks garden tools.
- Those who want the option to mulch and cut grass with the same mower.
- Those who require a medium size cutting deck (35cm) that can work efficiently in small, medium and large gardens.
- People who want a large grass collection box (40L) to reduce the amount of stops.
- People who have limited storage as this mower is compact with folding handles.
Of course this is open to interpretation so if you don’t fall under every single category then don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll still love this product as it has loads of great features you will make use of even if you’re not its perfect customer.

A great mower at a great price. Saw it on QVC first then purchased from Amazon.
Hi, I’m finding your website very helpful, but I’d just like a little extra help if that’s OK…….
I have a lawn that’s a little less than 100m2, square shape that’s lined with raised wooden sleepers, so cutting up to the sleepers is important. I also have a small front lawn, although it may go in the future, and I also cut the grass verge on the pavement.
I want a cordless electric battery one that will mulch (planning on Mulching most of the time), and so I have ended up looking at the Greenworks 41cm. Although I just found out about the Aerotek 40cm and thought that also looks interesting. Is it just a coincidence that the Greewnworks & Aerotek look very similar, or are they from the same manufacturer? Do you have any preference between the two? Or any other mower that you’d recommend?
I currently have a Bosch Rotak 34 Corded (must be over 12 years now).
Regards,
Andy
Hi Andy,
Thanks for your email.
My favourite cordless mower at the moment is the Worx WG779E.2 however, the UK version of this mower does not mulch. This is such a shame as the US version provides this option.
I think you have found the best two cordless mowers with this deck size that have a mulching ability.
Between the Greenworks and the Aerotek I would personally go with the Greenworks mower due to the slightly better build quality and lower cutting level (10 mm lower).
The charge time and run time are pretty much identical and both have a two year warranty.
Many thanks
Mark
Thanks Mark,
That’s really useful. I was also considering the Ryobi mowers, like the RLM18X36250 – do you have any experience with them?
The Greenworks can be bought with 1 or 2 batteries, but I’m thinking that 1 would be good enough for my size of lawn. It’s currently on Amazon for £299 (1 battery), but I think it was cheaper earlier in the year so I might hang on and see if the price goes back down again.
Regards,
Andy
Hi Andy
Thanks for coming back to me.
Not too much experience with Ryobi, I will try get them to send me one that mulches so I can take a look.
Yes I think one battery would be fine if you keep the lawn a reasonable length.
Thanks again.
Kind regards
Mark
I had to use this as both my neighbourghs are bakers? What are the chances of that and complain everythime I use a petrol (my preffered choice and best way of cutting the lawn), so they moan if I cut the lawn when they are asleep. from 9am till 6pm. This lawn mower is quite I will give it that, howver the lowest setting it just stalls. The grass is left everywhere in comparrison to a Petrol mower and it simply doesnt have the oomph to throw the cut grass into the collector box. The window for the collection is too small. I have tried this cutting in stages and it still is appallingly bad. Teh battey lasts about 20mins, which is why I had to buy 3 as I have a larger then average lawn area. The batterys have a life span of about 5 years. My petrol is going strong after 35 years! The batteries at the time I bought them were about £80 each so think about it you will need every five years a new battery and you have to have the hassle of charging them. They do fit other Greenworks tools, I have a chainsaw but again it is no way a match for a petrol chain saw. I am now going to say to my neighbourghs put up with the noise of petrol or move to a a place where there are no neighbourghs! This is poor performer, and where I only have to cut the grass once in seven to 10 days I have to use this every 3-5 days depending on rainfall!
