Summary
The Cobra GTRM40 is an electric lawn mower that has a 40cm (16″) cutting deck and comes supplied with a large 40 litre grass collection bag and a rear roller for a striped lawn appearance. This mower has a wide range of cutting heights (7 stages, 20mm to 75mm), weighs 18kg and is provided with a Cobra 2 year warranty.
I’ve been looking at several Cobra lawn mowers recently and the GTRM range has impressed me greatly. Not only are these simple and effective mowers, but they deliver a really good cut that could rival some of the more expensive models. The Cobra GTRM40 is one of four mowers in the range and is suitable for medium sized gardens.
It comes with a nice range of features, but doesn’t go so heavy on these that you find yourself in a tizzy trying to figure out how to use it. You’ve got a couple of mowing options including cut & collect and mulching as well as a decent and versatile selection of cutting heights.
The Cobra GTRM40 has been designed for user comfort and has some great features that allow for this. It’s lightweight and easy to move and in this Cobra GTRM40 review, I’ll be looking at the mower in a lot more detail.
Main Features
- 40cm cutting deck
- 7 cutting heights from 20mm to 75mm
- 1600w motor
- Larger rear wheels for improved manoeuvrability and stability
- Rear roller for a striped lawn
- Corded electric
- 10m power cable
- 40 L hybrid folding collection bag
- Mulching plug included
- Comfortable padded handles
- Quick release folding handles
Power System
This is an electric corded mower that runs on a 1600 watt motor. This is more than adept for the size of the lawn mower and gives you a very impressive amount of power capable of dealing with tougher conditions. As a direct result of this, you get a much better cut that requires less work from you.
What I really liked about the Cobra GTRM40 was the fact that it comes with the mulching plug supplied. The 1600 watt motor ensures that the mulching process is effective and cuts the grass cuttings into tiny pieces that in turn provide essential nutrients and moisture back to your lawn.
I was a little disappointed that this mower comes with a standard 10m power cable. If you have a larger lawn with no additional power sockets then you may need an extension lead to cover the entire lawn area.
If you want something a little more powerful, then the Cobra GTRM40 does have a big brother the GTRM43 which has a larger cutting deck as well as a slightly more powerful 1800w motor.

Features In Detail
Performance
When I look at a lawn mower, one of the first things I think about is whether it is going to provide an even and clean cut. I have to say that I wasn’t disappointed with this one. Thanks to the four wheel and rear roller design, you get a beautifully level cut even across edges of the lawn.
The Cobra GTRM40 is designed to make it easy to move around the lawn thanks to its full width starter bar, padded “petrol style” handles and larger rear wheels. Being such a lightweight piece of equipment, it is perfect for people of all abilities and won’t feel like a strain. Cobra markets its products as being designed for minimum effort with perfect results, and I have to say that I agree.
The 1600w motor is just about right for an electric mower with a 40cm deck, and never seems to struggle even when the grass is damp.
Deck and Blade
The Cobra GTRM40 features a polymer deck which offers great resistance and unlike steel decks, is much more lightweight. OK, it might not have the same durability but it’s certainly strong enough for everyday domestic use.
The steel rotary blades deliver an excellent cut and with a 40cm cutting width, this is the perfect lawn mower for the average sized garden. That said, since there are four mowers in this range, there may be better options, depending on the size of your garden. I have already discussed the biggest model in the range, but for those with smaller gardens there is the GTRM38 which has a 38cm cutting deck and is powered by the same 1600 watt motor. Alternatively, for lesser needs, the GTRM34 has a 34cm cutting deck and a slightly less powerful 1300 watt motor, but still has many other similar features to this one.

- GTRM34 – 34cm deck

- GTRM43 – 43cm deck
Height Adjustment
It is essential to have a good range of cutting heights so that you are able to tackle long and short grass in a variety of conditions. The good news is that the Cobra GTRM40 comes with a choice of seven cutting heights ranging between 20mm and 75mm. These are changed through a central lever which makes everything quick and simple.
Handles
One of the most outstanding things about the Cobra GTRM40 is that the manufacturer appears to have really considered the user. This mower is fitted with soft grip handles that are a delight to use. Not only this, but the controls are placed for easy access so you never have to overreach yourself.
What’s more, the handles fold at dual points using quick release mechanisms and this allows you to store the mower more conveniently. These folding points also mean that you can adjust the angle of the handles to a position that feels comfortable for you.

Wheels
Something that you don’t see on a lot of electric lawn mowers is the combination of four wheels, a rear roller and the ability to mulch the grass cuttings. But in the case of this Cobra GTRM40, this is exactly what you will get. This design allows for a more even mow and the integrated roller produces a manicured striped effect for your lawn. All this is complimented by the mulching ability keeping your lawn lush, green and healthy.
Roller (Stripes)
Unlike the equivalent cordless range of Cobra mowers, Cobra have added a rear roller to this GTRM40 mower to produce a striped lawn appearance. Just bear in mind that, as with all electric mowers, they are lightweight and will not produce a defined and long lasting stripes that you would achieve with a heavy petrol mower.
Mulching
Mulching is great in dry weather and provides you with a way to fertilise your lawn without having to spend a penny; aside from what you’ll pay for the mower, of course. Rather than being collected in the grass bag, the clippings are recirculated around the deck and chopped into very fine pieces. These are then pushed down to the lower layers of the lawn to penetrate and nourish.
The Cobra GTRM40 comes complete with a mulching plug which is inserted into the rear of the machine once the grass box has been removed.
Grass Collection Bag
The 40 L grass bag that comes with the Cobra GTRM40 is ideal for this size of lawn mower. It is a plastic and fabric bag, which means that it will collapse, making it much easier to store, even in more compact spaces. The grass collection bag attaches and removes easily from the mower and there is a handle that makes emptying the cuttings easy.
In addition, the grass bag features a full indicator which eliminates the guesswork when it comes to emptying.

Pros and Cons
Should You Buy the Cobra GTRM40?
I would recommend this lawn mower to people who want a corded model with a little more get up and go. While the other mowers in the GTRM range are excellent, this one has that bit of extra power that sets it apart. No, it isn’t the most powerful in the range, but for most domestic needs, it more than gets the job done.
The Cobra GTRM40 is certainly a lawn mower that would suit anyone who is looking for convenience since it is designed to be super easy to use. With various comfort features, it would also work well for those who don’t really enjoy cutting the lawn, but know they need to maintain it. It’s efficient and will give you a quick and (almost) effortless way to keep that grass in check.
When you consider that you are getting a mower that incorporates a rear roller, has the ability to mulch the lawn, has a generous range of cutting heights, has excellent Cobra build quality and a 2 year warranty, then I can’t see any reason why this mower should not be top of your electric mower shortlist. It is a shame that Cobra didn’t include a longer power cable, however 10m is pretty much standard and can be overcome with an extension cable and RCD.
Conclusion
The Cobra GTRM40 is one of a range of four GTRM mowers and being the second largest is great for medium sized gardens, even those that are slightly on the larger size. It’s got some truly great features but the most stand-out part for me is how easy it is to use. There’s no messing around, it’s simply a case of plug and play…or work, as the case may be.
Cobra are renowned for their build and component quality and this Cobra GTRM40 is no exception. What’s more, with this product you will also receive a 2 year domestic manufacturer’s warranty.
I just hope you can get your hands on one, they are so popular that stock sells out fast, good luck!
